Mission: Year One: Whispers in the Wind
Location: Security Chief's Office
Timeline: MD 013 - 1400 Hrs

Dashku wanted to continue to get to know all of the senior staff, she also had a secondary reason for meeting with the security chief. She'd done a shift on the bridge and was now trying to work on secondary duties.

As she arrived at the security offices, she found the Chief's office and tapped the chime on the door. After a moment she stepped back and straightened out her uniform.

Kei had been on a call to Sam Matthews, one of her junior officers that she'd taken under her wing so to speak and grooming him for a role as an assistant department head. Sometimes he just needed tough love, which was her speciality after all.

As she approached the door to answer the chime the doors opened at her presence. "Just get it done Sam! If you make me come down there you'll both regret it! Davaris out!" she tapped her comm badge, closed her eyes and shook her head.

As she opened them she was greeted by a larger green skinned female whom she regarded as Lieutenant Zhevou. There was what seemed like a moments silence before Keishara took a step back. "Come in."

Dashku had arched one of her brows in the silence before she offered her a curt smile and stepped into the office with the Chief of Security, she took a second to glance around before looking at at the Chief.

"I wanted to take a moment to sit down with you, really I'm working my way through all the senior staff, and I wanted to make sure you have everything you need from operations."

"Sounds labourious." Kei commented, the very thought of doing the rounds of the senior staff made her feet hurt but she offered the woman a seat by gesturing to the one at the edge of her desk as she moved around the other side and sat down.

"As far as I know Lieutenant I have no issues with Operations. Most of the security systems that require large amounts of power distribution are powered down until we need them." she was referring to shields, phasers, torpedo launchers and even forcefields when required. "Possibly I have a small annoyance that internal security scanners are operating at minimum levels. I'm sure you've heard of the attack on Lieutenant s'Lovok?" she asked rhetorically. "Attacked in a section of the ship where I have downed security sensors." she shook her head in disappointment at that. It was more to do with herself, but it truth she had asked for them to be repaired months before the new senior staff members arrived.

Dashku arched one of her brows, she was a little surprised that there was nothing outside of some power distribution issues. She pursed her lips for a moment as she gave thought to where to start. "There is a reason why I am good at what I do, Commander. I can look into the security sensors, check maintenance logs. I also over see supplies and ship's equipment, if you have any requests or need anything I'm happy to work to acquire it for you."

"I don't doubt your ability Lieutenant." Kei raised an eyebrow of her own. If she had no-one in the brig, no weapons powered or defensive systems engaged there wasn't much power she drew from the ship aside from possibly internal sensor should something happen or other superfluous systems. "My teams do their own maintenance on our weapons but if you could ask one or two of your people to back check the phasers and rifles I'd appreciate it."

"We'll keep the inventory numbers where they are supposed to be. Maintenance would fall to your team or engineering," Dashku replied with a nod. She paused for a moment, before she continued. "If that's all, I have one other request."

"It is all." Kei replied. "What is your request?" she asked wondering if it was a security request or a second officer one.

"I'm sure you've read enough of my file to know how I was raised. Despite my dislike of my Mother's methods, there was truth in much of what she tried to teach me. I just didn't like the application. Staying sharp is one of them," Dashku started with the explanation, even if she didn't need to. "I want to spend time training with our Marine unit, weekly. The marine CO is ok with it if you sign off."

Kei arched an eyebrow. Why was she wanting to join the marines? Her training regime was not an easy task, but she wasn't going to judge a woman she didn't know. Well, not openly anyway. "Staying sharp is commendable, it is one of the things I focus on in security also." she began. "If you want to spend time with Lieutenant Th’relnal and his marines then that is fine with me. I am sure you will find their insights useful."

"Don't think I'm insulting you, your department or their training," Dashku held up one of her hands. "Starfleet loves to talk about peace and exploration, but the Dominion war proved there are some well trained fighting units. If there hadn't been the Dominion would have won. Thank you for granting my request."

"I am not insulted." Keishara replied succinctly. It was more an annoyance than hurt feelings. "The marines that assisted the security forces during the Dominion War will always have my respect. I am well aware of how badly it could have gone otherwise." Kei hesitated a moment before relaxing her shoulders a touch. "I would rather those on this ship were able to defend themselves to the best of their ability. It gives security more time to react and better distribute our resources."

It all sounded very official, a company line, a politicians answer. However, it was no less true.

"I thank you for coming and asking. It shows respect, and I do not forget that." Kei closed her eyes and slowly nodded at he woman before opening them to gaze upon her.

"I do try to show respect," Dashku bowed her head slightly, she hesitated for a moment, before she continued. "It's in my file, but I know well how to defend myself. I grew up on an Orion world with a mother who was already in the Syndicate. There are certain duties a first daughter is expected to fulfil and rigorous combat training is part of that."

"I've heard of that." Kei replied. She had known them to warriors of sort, ones that would fight battles for their houses and were experts in many fields. "I know it's not an easy role to get out of..." she hesitated. "Did you mother allow your to leave your role as first daughter?" she asked. In the back of her mind concerned that Dashku's mother may try to 'reclaim' her.

"I didn't give her a choice," Dashku replied curtly, she didn't like talking about her mother or her raising. They had very rarely seen eye to eye. "And she knows better than to interfere with my life."

Kei knew when not to press a subject. "That is fair." she said simply. Kei had experience of pirates, a different kind, and the experience itself left a lasting and scarring impression on her. "You are strong to have made the choices you did, Lieutenant." Kei felt she understood the woman a bit better. Not much, but it was an insight into the woman's character. "I will not keep you if you are needed elsewhere though."

"Thank you Commander, the job of an Operation's department is never done," Dashku nodded to the Chief of Security, before she stood up from the chair she'd been in. "I'll see you my next shift on the bridge."

She didn't wait for Keishara's response, not out of a need to have the last word but simply because she believed she'd already been dismissed and she did have a lot of work to do.

'Interesting woman.' Kei thought to herself as the doors of her office closed. The ship was certainly shaping up to a very diverse senior staff.
