Mission: Year One: Whispers in the Wind
Location: Main Engineering, USS Moore
Timeline: MD 012 - 1215 hours

Naz hadn't properly met her new boss yet, Lieutenant Baaru. A Bajoran/Cardassian hybrid was more and more prevalent since the end of the Dominion War. It was nice to see but still some discrimination and bigotry against them as a mixed race still existed on Bajor, on Cardassia and even Starfleet/Earth. Naz had not time for such things and happily welcomed the woman on board, even if she hadn't properly met her yet.

Walking up to the Chief she smiled and spoke, "Lieutenant Baaru?" she asked, not to make sure it was her but more so to get her attention.

Standing at the island in the middle of engineering, Liana was overseeing a general system’s check when she heard someone from behind her address her more formally then she’d asked her crew to. Turning around to face the individual, Liana recognised her face from a PADD that had been left on her office desk, “Ah, welcome aboard Petty Officer, you’re just in time for the fun” she said, motioning for Nazanin to join her at the island console, “We’re just about to give the warp core a run up. Alight Terry, punch it!” She called out

The was a noise from further into Engineering that could be described as a tone of acknowledgement before the warp core lit up and began to pulse. At first the pulses were slow but gradually they increased in speed.

Nazanin always marvelled at the sight of the warp core firing. The swirls of blue and the hum of it always gave her a sense of calm that she'd rarely felt anywhere else. "Definitely a beautiful sight." she commented but she wasn't there to watch a swirly warp core but for something more concerning.

In her hand she held a PaDD containing information about some concealed and encrypted transmissions having left the ship. Some comm traffic in the area that was outside the norm, or she she thought.

Standing there for a moment admiring her new staff’s work, Liana turned to face Nazanin, “So, what can I do for you?” She asked before noticing the PADD she had in her hand, “oh, what have you got there?”

Naz handed the PADD over in an almost instinctual gesture for Liana to look at. "I've noticed some strange data coming from a source within the ship. Not a standard comm signal, and its happened more than once." she stated. "I know Ensign Bishop and Lieutenant Zhevou have been working on something 'top secret'..." she emphasised those words as sometimes Sophie got too excited and let some things slip to her. "and asked me to take a look at some things for her. I found these files and wanted to know what you thought of them."

Liana paused for a moment at the mention of 'Top Secret' before putting the PADD face down on the table, "Are you sure I have the clearance for this? Just because I'm a department head doesn't mean I know what the other departments are doing."

"I'd say you have clearance to look at communications files as part of your engineering duties ma'am." Naz replied. "If you think about it... if I'd found these files and knew nothing about whatever else was happening I'd still have brought them to you and we'd still have investigated them." she added as they both moved to a larger console.

Naz placed her PADD on the console so it could link and download the files for easier access on a bigger scale. She brought up file 1.1/A3. "There is no audio on the message but the transcript is there." she sighed. "It's just mostly encrypted and/or redacted. All I've been able to get are words such as 'chaos', 'Brighton', and something about the Romulans."

Giving a sigh, Liana gave the data a look over. Encryptions were never her strong suit, but maybe the computer could do something with her command level. Entering her command code into the interface, she loaded up a decryption program that she’d found the other day while playing around with the interface. “Well, let’s see what we’ve got”

After a few minutes, a couple more words had been decrypted, but not much else, “Well it seems this encryption is rather top notch. The computer is gave trouble breaking through and so far it’s only given us a few more words. Like that’s the name of the colony we’re currently in orbit of……and that says something like ‘going to’ or maybe ‘coming from’, it’s hard to tell. Where exactly did you find this?”

"It was in the secondary comm buffer ma'am. Someone had tried to scrub it but didn't take into account the amount of back ups or filters a signal or message passes through to get to source." Naz replied with a small shrug. "I think if we work on it a bit more we'll get a few more words at least."

“Yea, that does sound rather suspicious. Come on, let’s head to one of the labs and see what those computers make of it” Liana said as she stood up straight, “exciting isn’t it?”

"Have always loved a mystery." Naz grinned as they headed off to one of the engineering labs.
